Description

ProZen is Value Added Life’s trade name for Suntheanine®, the 100% pure, patented L-theanine, which is the active ingredient in the green tea plant (Camellia sinensis).  After water, green tea is the world’s most popular beverage and is consumed for its pleasant taste, relaxation effect and many other health benefits. These characteristics are attributed to L-theanine, a non-protein amino acid. Since it constitutes only about 1-2% of the dry tea leaves, extracting it was an expensive process before the Suntheanine® synthesized process was developed.

That green tea is known for its calming effects contradicts the stimulating properties of caffeine. This is due to L-theanine acting against the effects of caffeine on the nervous system. Research has shown that L-theanine, which is able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, creates a sense of relaxation in approximately 30 minutes after intake. The mental effects of L-theanine were tested on female volunteers aged 18 to 22. Brain waves were measured 60 minutes after ingestion of L-theanine and showed an increase in alpha waves (these are normally generated during a state of relaxation) compared with the control group. The effect is deep relaxation, but with the ability to maintain mental alertness without drowsiness.
L-theanine may influence emotions and mood due to its effects on the increased release of dopamine. Recently, L-theanine has been shown to normalise serotonin and dopamine concentrations in the brain. Dopamine affects emotions and serotonin affects the central nervous system. This combination of effects will enhance a good mood while staying alert and focused. Animal studies have shown that L-theanine improves the ability to learn and strengthen memory.

L-theanine has in animal tumor studies been indicated to increase the antitumor activity of some cancer chemotherapeutic agents (doxorubicin and idarubicin) and ameliorate their side effects. At the same time, L-theanine seems to decrease the oxidative stress caused by these agents on normal cells. L- theanine’s properties for strengthening the immune system  were recently confirmed with a laboratory study demonstrating that L-theanine helps prepare the immune system to fight against foreign substances such as bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Many women of childbearing age suffer from symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) and have to cope with the anxiety, fatigue, pain, irritability, bloating, and other symptoms typically associated therewith. How does L-theanine bring relief from PMS? Bloating is caused by eating which is triggered by cravings which are the result of moods. L-theanine modulates moods and enhances a state of deep relaxation.

A recent clinical trial has proven L-theanine’s ability to promote quality sleep. When 200 mg of L-theanine was taken before bedtime, the participants reported a significant absence of “feeling exhausted” and a reduced need for sleep. The study showed that L-theanine produced a notable improvement of sleep efficiency. It confirmed that L-theanine does not increase the duration of sleep, it improves the quality of sleep by allowing the mind, while in a sleep state, to relax and recuperate.

With life in today’s society being so stressful, many people are looking for natural ways to achieve mental tranquility and sleep improvement without becoming lethargic or drowsy. L-theanine is a safe (millions of cups of green tea can’t be wrong), fast-acting and effective alternative to kava kava (Piper methysticum), St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) and valerian (Valeriana officinalis), which have negative side-effects.

L-theanine, an amino acid, has been identified as green tea’s active ingredient to which l the many health benefits associated with green tea can be attributed. It may enhance learning ability, induce relaxation and relieve emotional stress. It helps to increase focus, concentration and learning, can lower blood pressure and PMS symptoms, reduce muscle pain and it reduces the effects of caffeine.

Specification

Composition :

Each capsule contains L-Theanine as Suntheanine® 100mg.

Pharmacological Action:

ProZen contains L-theanine a non-protein amino acid derivative of L-glutamic acid, mainly found naturally in the green tea plant (Camellia sinensis). L-theanine is the predominant amino acid in green tea and makes up 50% of the total free amino acids in the plant. L-theanine has been shown to penetrate the blood-brain barrier through the leucine-preferring transport system and has been demonstrated to produce significant increases in serotonin and/or dopamine concentrations in the brain, principally in the striatum, hypothalamus and hippocampus. Recent studies have investigated the possibility that L-theanine might enhance learning ability, induce relaxation and relieve emotional stress. Memory and learning ability were said to be improved in young male Wistar rats given 180 mg of L-theanine daily for four months. Performance was assessed using a test for learning ability and passive and active avoidance tests for memory. Little is known about the pharmacokinetics of L-theanine in humans. It appears from animal that L-theanine is absorbed from the small intestine via a sodium-coupled active transport process and appears to cross the blood-brain barrier.  It is reported that serum theanine concentration reached a peak 0.5 to 2 hours after oral administration in rats. The effects of L-theanine are felt after 30 minutes of consumption. Excretion was via the kidneys.
